After spending seemingly endless months bundled up hiding from the cold and sweating it out indoors, summer in Baltimore, along with its debilitating humidity is finally here! Although it may be tempting to camp out poolside and wait out the heat, there are many ways to stay cool, stay in shape, and still look hot.
The Life Aquatic
Many gyms offer water aerobic or swim stroke clinic classes as part of their group exercise programs. An exclusive Aqua Power class, offered by the Canton Club, uses water’s added resistance to not only improve your stamina, but also tone your muscles and build strength, all while staying cool. As an added bonus, because many of these classes are outside, you will be able to catch some rays while burning major calories!
Take a Hike
Literally, hit the woods and check out some of the great trails around town. Running, walking, or biking outside is a great alternative to using indoor machines because the rolling hills and uneven terrain will keep your muscles constantly challenged. In addition, you can include your favorite four legged friend in the fun!
Rock the Boat
Step away from the rowing machine and hop into a kayak! The sport’s paddling motion will not only help to firm up your arms, but can also improve core strength. Kayaking is also a great way to spend time with friends while exploring the open water and enjoying the scenery. Want to get into the sport, but don’t want to spend money on lot’s of gear? Look into joining a kayak club, which not only teaches you the basics, but also lends you all the necessary equipment.
Whatever you choose to do, just remember that like anything, working out outside gets easier as your body adjusts to the temperature. In the meantime, just take it easy, slowly increase your intensity and take in plenty of fluids. Remember, the key to staying fit is finding something you enjoy doing and sticking with it, regardless of the season.
