Dear DocSide Vet,

My dog Tyler is getting older and I noticed he is hesitant to go up and down stairs.  Can he have aspirin?

Dear Brittany –

It sounds like Tyler may be experiencing arthritis, which can be very painful.  When a pet is in pain, owners are eager to give medication to ease that pain, but giving human medications to animals can cause more problems than it cures. Aspirin can cause gastrointestinal upset or even ulcers.  Aspirin is metabolized differently in your pet than in a person, so it is NOT recommended. The best recommendation is to have him thoroughly evaluated by a veterinarian so he can be started on appropriate medication or therapies to make him more comfortable.  Also, because your pet is older, he may need his liver values checked before starting certain medications (to ensure he can tolerate them).
