Dear Doc,

I’m traveling to Ohio with my cat for the holidays.  It is a six hour trip and she has never been in a car for longer than a quick visit to the vet and she cries the whole way.  Is there anything I can do to make the trip easier for her?  - Weary Traveler

Dear Weary Traveler,
Traveling with cats can certainly be stressful for both you and your pet, but with proper planning, it can go smoothly. It is essential you have an appropriate carrier for your cat; a loose cat in a car can injure herself or cause an accident.  Familiarize her with the carrier before the trip and take a few mid-length trips to test how she responds. Many animals are anxious and vocalize at first, but soon calm.  If she still seems too anxious you can contact your veterinarian to discuss whether a sedative is needed.
